On their return they were cultivated in giant Chinese hothouses producing the oversized specimens pictured here, along with a host of other fruit and vegetables. Scientist hope the pumpkins, as well as two-foot long (06.m) cucumbers, 14lb (6.3kg) aubergines, and chilli plants which resemble small trees, could provide an answer to the world’s food crisis. It is thought the near zero gravity conditions in space result in super-sized fruit and vegetables with a higher vitamin content. Crucially, the plants are said to produce harvests which are ten to 20 per cent higher than normal - offering a rich source of food for the country’s 1.3 billion people. Struggling for space in giant hothouses at the Guandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences are 21lb (9.5kg) tomatoes and enormous watermelons. Researchers fired off a batch of 2,000 seeds into space in 2006 on the Shijian 8 satellite. After germination the best specimens were selected for further breeding. Researcher Lo Zhigang said: “Conventional agricultural development has taken us as far as we can go and demand for food from a growing population is endless. “Space seeds offer the opportunity to grow fruit and vegetables bigger and faster.” A total of 22 provinces are taking part in the programme, coordinated by the China Academy of Sciences, and China says its giant fruit and vegetables have already been sold to Japan, Thailand and Singapore. Confirmed: Corexit Still Being Sprayed in the Gulf

Veteran chemist Bob Naman says that Corexit is still being sprayed in the Gulf, and that he found 13.3 parts per million in Cotton Bayou, Alabama. As I pointed out last week: Parts per million might not sound like much. But the EPA has found that exposure to 42 parts per million kil led 50% of mysid shrimp within 4 days and most of the remaining shrimp didn't last much longer). In response to Naman's findings, the mayor of Orange Beach - the town located on Cotton Bayou - said that the City would conduct its own, independent tests: The City's test results have now come back, showing 66 parts per million of dispersant. The City Engineer for Orange Beach - Kit Alexander - also states that the EPA sets the screening level for dispersant at 750 parts per million (see above video).In other words, the EPA doesn't even test for Corexit at concentrations of less than 750 ppm, even though Corexit at much lower concentrations kills marine life. I have personally been copied with emails sent to the Coast Guard documenting continued spraying of Corexit. There's been some speculation by bloggers, including John Young of Cryptome.com , that the leak is part of a disinformation operation, and that the documents themselves could even be fake, their release to the press an act of collusion between the government and WikiLeaks. This is because of the fact that the leaked documents are digital files with no signature to prove their authenticity, that they were released immediately to the mainstream media instead of directly to the public on the web, and that their release has been covered extensively by the American press, when in the past the issue of civilian deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq have been downplayed by the mainstream media...even ignored. The teen — an Ecuadorian who escaped and stumbled wounded to a military checkpoint on a highway — told authorities that his captors had identified themselves as Zetas, a drug gang whose control of parts of the northern state of Tamaulipas is so brutal and complete that even many Mexicans avoid traveling its highways. The 19-year-old staggered to the checkpoint with a bullet wound in his neck and face, saying he had played dead to escape from Zetas gunmen at a ranch in San Fernando, just 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. He told investigators that Zetas gunmen intercepted the migrants as they moved toward the border, then took them blindfolded to the ranch where they were told to hand over cash, the source said. The migrants had little cash, the teen reportedly said, and the gunmen then told them they could work as Zetas assassins and get paid $2,000 a month. It was not clear if they were supposed to work in the United States. When the migrants refused, the gunmen opened fire, the source described the teen as saying. While the teen's name had been reported earlier, msnbc.com has decided to remove it given concerns he could be targeted. Researchers have known for several years that after a person ingests a drug, their body may excrete residues of the chemical that remain biologically active. Thus, internal drug use, combined with improper disposal of unused drug stores, has been blamed for residues of everything from antibiotics to painkillers to hormones found in municipal and natural water supplies across the country. Because drugs are specifically designed to produce biological effects at very low concentrations, this pollution is considered a major threat to human and environmental health. Now a study conducted by researchers from the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) and Touro University in Henderson, Nev., and presented at the American Chemical Society annual meeting in San Francisco has shown that the shower and washing machine may be even more potent sources of pharmaceutical pollution than the toilet. "We've long assumed that the active ingredients from medications enter the environment as a result of their excretion via urine and feces," study co-author Ilene Ruhoy said. "However, for the first time, we have identified potential alternative routes for the entry into the environment by way of bathing, showering and laundering." "These routes may be important for certain APIs found in medications that are applied ... to the skin," she said.
