In a sharp rebuke to climate alarmists who believe
human-generated carbon dioxide is responsible for causing catastrophic
global warming, a Russian scientist has issued what amounts to a news
flash announcing, "Sun Heats Earth!"
Habibullo Abdussamatov, the head of space research at St.
Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, has published
a paper in which he tracks sunspot activity going back to the 19th
century to argue that total sun irradiance, or TSI, is the primary
factor responsible for causing climate variations on Earth, not carbon
dioxide.
Moreover, Abdussamatov's analysis of sun activity data has led
him to conclude that the Earth is entering a prolonged cooling phase
because sunspot activity is currently in a phase regarded as a
"minimum." "Observations of the sun show that as for the increase in
temperature, carbon dioxide is 'not guilty,'" Abdussamatov wrote, "and
as for what lies ahead in the coming decades, it is not catastrophic
warming, but a global, and very prolonged temperature drop."
Abdussamatov's paper is featured on page 140 of a report issued this year by the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works ,
documenting more than 700 scientists who disagree over the proposition
that global warming is a man-made, or anthropogenic phenomenon. As historical support for his theory, Abdussamatov cited the
observations in 1893 made by the English astronomer Walter Maunder, who
came to the conclusion that from 1645 to 1715, sunspots had been
generally absent, which coincided with the middle and coldest part of
the severe temperature dip known as the "Little Ice Age" that stretched
from the 14th to the 16th centuries.
Abdussamatov also observed "the most significant solar event in
the 20th century was the extraordin

Sept. 18, 2009 Â
A new study led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCAR)
and the University of Michigan, finds that Earth was bombarded last
year with high levels of solar energy at a time when the Sun was in an
unusually quiet phase.
Â
Â
Â
Scientists previously thought that thestreams largely disappeared as
the solar cycle approached minimum. But when the study team compared
measurements within the current solar minimum interval, taken in 2008,
with measurements of the last solar minimum in 1996, they found that
Earth in 2008 was continuing to resonate with the effects of the
streams. Although the current solar minimum has fewer sunspots than any
minimum in 75 years, the Sun's effect on Earth's outer radiation belt,
as measured by electron fluxes, was more than three times greater last
year than in 1996.
Â
"The Sun continues to surpriseus,"
says lead author Sarah Gibson of NCAR's High Altitude Observatory. "The
solar wind can hit Earth like a fire hose even when there are virtually
no sunspots." The study, also written by scientists at NOAA and NASA,
is being published today in the Journal of Geophysical Research. It was
funded by NASA and by the National Science Foundation, NCAR's sponsor.
Â
Â
Â
When strong solar winds blow byEarth,
they intensify the energy of the planet's outer radiation belt. This
can create serious hazards for weather, navigation, and communications
satellites that travel at high altitudes within the outer radiation
belts, while also threatening astronauts in the International Space
Station. FULL ARTICLE: http://earthchangesmedia.com/secure/3247.326/artic le-9162526271.php newsletter@earth changesmedia.com

A new report circulating in the Kremlin today states that Russian Space
Scientists are warning that the United States and European Union plan to
actually move the orbit of our Planet Earth, in what these Westerners are now calling
an “ accelerated phase ”, is “ doomed to failure ” and could actually
threaten the existence of all mankind.
Not being largely known by the Western peoples is that their present state
of life under the twin terrors of war and Global economic collapse has, in
reality, been a decades-long scheme by their leaders to suborn their citizens
natural intellect in order to keep them from knowing the true terror of our
times and from where our greatest danger lies, our own Solar System.
In the briefest overview of this danger possible, one must turn back to when
the United States President Ronald Reagan first took office in 1981, and who
upon his reading the assassination
file of Pope John Paul
I became aware of the true danger facing our World, whereupon he, Reagan, then
decided to inform his citizens, like the late Roman prelate had attempted to
do, only to become another casualty of the assassins
of secrets and darkness on March
30, 1981 .
Pope John Paul II ,
being saddened by the near fatal assassination attempt upon Reagan, and knowing
of the true facts surrounding the murder of his predecessor John Paul I, became
the last World leader to attempt to tell humanity “ the secret ” whereupon he, like those before him, was gunned
down on May 13, 1981, effectively placed into the “ abyss of silence ”.
Though never fully informing his people of the true danger they were facing,
Reagan did continue to subtly
allude to it, the most famous of his “ warnings ”
being his September 21, 1987 speech before the assembly of the United Nations,
and where he stated in a grave tone, “I wonder how quic

I'm on the big island of Hawaii on the Hamakua coast. the cloud

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – For the second time in less than a week, a potentially dangerous hydrogen gas leak early Wednesday forced NASA to delay shuttle Endeavour 's launch to the international space station , this time until July at the earliest.
Launch
officials waited almost an hour after the leak appeared during fueling,
trying to fix it through remote commands, before calling off the
predawn launch.
The leak occurred in the same
place as one that cropped up Saturday, in the hydrogen gas vent line
that hooks up to the external fuel tank. A similar problem stalled a
shuttle flight three months ago.
"We're going to step back and figure out what the problem is and go fix it," said deputy space shuttle program manager LeRoy Cain. "And then we'll fly as soon as we're ready to safely go do that."
Mission
managers had ordered repairs following Saturday's delay. The hookup
itself and two seals were replaced. The same repair worked back in
March, but engineers never found the cause of the problem.
Launch officials said they were proud of the way the team hustled over the past four days trying to get Endeavour to the space station, with a new outdoor addition for the Japanese lab.
"I
sure wish we could have rewarded them and the astronauts and everybody
else with a launch this morning," said Mike Leinbach, who was serving
as assistant launch director for this mission. "But the leak was way
out of spec again, and so we were just not comfortable pressing on."
Even
before hydrogen gas began leaking — a serious situation because of its
flammability — NASA was up against a tight deadline for making the 5:40
a.m. launch. Fueling was delayed three hours by thunderstorms Tuesday
night, and the

Very little information about the Photon (Light) Belt has ever been
made available to the people of our Earth/Shan. Mostly lies have
covered this Truth to prevent the people from understanding their
future and determining their destiny. Let us now learn the Truth
concerning the Photon Belt.
Our solar system and our Earth, Shan, travel an orbit of 26,000
years around Alcione, the Great Central Sun of the Pleiades
Constellation. Twice during each orbit we pass through the Photon Belt.
The Photon Belt is a disc-shaped band of light energy lying at
right-angles to Shan's plane of orbit. This band of light circles the
Great Central Sun, Alcione. It originates from and also encircles the
Greatest Central Sun of the Milky Way Galaxy and extends throughout the
entire galaxy. Thus, all celestial bodies within the Milky Way Galaxy
at some point in their orbits pass through the Photon Belt.
Quoting from Contact newspaper, October 15, 1996, p. 13, "The Photon
Belt is a huge, invisible band of highly charged, highly-concentrated,
immensely powerful photon (light) energy." The following diagram shows
that in a single orbit of our solar system around Alcione of 26,000
years, the orbit has four separate stages or periods of time. In one
complete orbit we pass through the Photon Belt twice, a period of total
light, and we pass through a period of day and night twice. The Photon
Belt periods are each 2,000 years long and the day/night periods are
each 11,000 years long. This makes a total of 26,000 years.
During the day/night period of approximately 11,000 years a
civilization is born and develops according to the enlightenment of its
people. Truth is presented by truthbringers, and by free-will choice
the people choose whether or not to follow the Laws of God and of the
Creation. Should the civilization fail to reach the level of complete
harmony and balance with the Laws of God and the Laws of Creation, the
planet is swept clea

Kremlin reports submitted to Prime Minster Putin on Monday’s near miss of
our Earth with the newly discovered asteroid 2009
DD45 , which if it had hit our Planet would have unleashed “ the
force of a thousand atomic bombs ”, are delivering an apocalyptic
warning that “ no time is left ” for
our World as catastrophic changes are said nearing as our Suns
destabilization of our entire Solar System is nearing its “ peak ”.
These dire warnings are reported to have been issued by one of Russia ’s top astrophysicists, Dr. Marina Romanova [pictured 2 nd photo left] , currently
assigned to the US-Russia collaborative research team with Cornell Plasma Astrophysics
Group in the United States, who is one of the World’s top experts in the
complex magnetic fields surrounding
stars and their associated “ funnel flows ”
many experts believe are responsible for the rapid heating of our entire Solar
System.
Not being told to the Western peoples by their propaganda media and
government sources about the many cataclysmic events soon to befall our Earth
is that our World is not alone in suffering a catastrophic buildup in its
temperatures as every Planet in our Solar System is heating up too .
This buildup of heat in our entire Solar System cannot be ignored by the
West’s scientists either, as the evidence for this being so exists to even the
most rudimentary of scientific examination, but for their absurdities in
explaining this phenomenon these same scientists stretch even the most absurd
boundaries of logic, and as we can see exampled:
“Earth
is heating up lately, but so are Mars, Pluto and other worlds in our solar system,
leading some scientists to speculate that a change in the sun’s activity is the
common thread linking all these baking events.
Others

The first joint Chinese-Russian mission to Mars is
set to take off in October and reach the red planet in August 2010, an
exploration project designer said.
A Russian Zenit rocket
will launch a Chinese Yinghuo-1 satellite and a Russian Phobos-Grunt
unmanned lander, Chen Changya, chief designer of the China-Russia Mars
exploration project, told Hong Kong's Wen Wei Po newspaper.
Phobos-Grunt is expected to study Mars from orbit, including its
atmosphere and dust storms, plasma and radiation, before landing on
Phobos, one of Mars' two small moons.
Yinghuo-1, which means Firefly-1, will explore the Martian environment
and carry out research into how surface water on the planet
disappeared, Chen said.
A challenge for Yinghuo-1 during the yearlong mission will be seven
periods of 8.8 hours in darkness, when the sun will be obscured by the
red planet and the satellite will not receive solar energy, Chen said.
During those times, Yinghuo-1 will go into "sleeping" status and restart itself after getting through each shadow.
Researchers are still looking at ways to help the satellite sustain
extremely low temperatures, plunging to minus 200 degrees Celsius, or
about minus 328 degree Fahrenheit, in the shadows, Chen said.
Meanwhile, China's second unmanned moon probe, Chang'e-2, is likely to
be launched this year, a year ahead of schedule, the newspaper said.
Chang'e-2 will collect more detailed images and statistics of the moon's surface, the newspaper said.

1.
The first members of our Apsu Solar System were our Sun, Apsu, and
planets Mercury and Tiamat (Ti. Amat). Tiamat "the water monster" was
also called Gaia, meaning the cleaved one or Tiamat/Gaia.
2. Our solar system gradually expanded by the "birth" of three planetary pairs:
a) Venus and Mars --- placed between Mercury and Tiamat.
b) Jupiter and Saturn --- placed beyond Tiamat.
c) Uranus and Neptune --- placed farther out.
3. An invading planet from outer space, Nibiru (Sumerian) or Marduk
(Babylonian), was drawn to our solar system and attracted to the outer
planet, Neptune.
4. Nibiru/Marduk moved in a retrograde (clockwise) orbit which was
counter to the other planets and had four satellites or moons.
5. Nibiru/Marduk passed in its orbit between Neptune and the next inner planet, Uranus.
6. As Nibiru/Marduk passed near Neptune, gravitational and magnetic
forces caused "Marduk's side to bulge out. This side was pulled away
and became Neptune's new moon, Triton, which now has also a retrograde
(clockwise) orbit.
7. Consequently, Marduk collided with Uranus, tilting Uranus on its
axis and creating Uranus' four moons. In the process Marduk gained
three more moons for a total of seven.
8. Marduk was pulled toward the extremely large planets of Saturn and Jupiter and changed her orbital pathway forever.
9. As Marduk passed Saturn, Saturn's moon, Gaga, was pulled away in
the direction of Mars and Venus and caused Gaga to have a "strange"
elliptical orbit. Gaga eventually became the planet, Pluto.
10. Marduk's orbit was further altered by the pull of Jupiter, placing Marduk on a collision course with Tiamat.
11. Tiamat was a very unstable planet encircled by eleven satellites
(moons), the largest of these was Kingu, a very large satellite.
12. Marduk did not collide with Tiamat, but Marduk's seven
satellites smashed into Tiamat and her eleven satellites headed by
Tiamat's largest satel

HD49933 was one of the stars observed using the Corot telescope
Scientists have recorded the sound of three stars similar to our Sun using France's Corot space telescope.
A team writing in Science journal says the sounds have enabled
them to get information about processes deep within stars for the first
time.
If you listen closely to the sounds of each star - by clicking
on the media in this page - you'll hear a regular repeating pattern.
These indicate that the entire star is pulsating.
You'll also note that the sound of one star is very slightly
different to the other. That's because the sound they make depends on
their age, size and chemical composition.
The technique, called "stellar seismology", is becoming increasingly
popular among astronomers because the sounds give an indication of what
is going on in the stars' interior.
Just as seismic waves moving through Earth provide information
about our planet's insides, so sound waves travelling through a star
carry information about its inner workings.
The Corot spacecraft detects the oscillations as subtle
variations in the light emitted by the star as the surface wobbles.
This light signal can then be converted back to sounds we understand.
According to Professor Eric Michel, of the Paris Observatory,
the technique is already giving researchers remarkable new insights.
He commented: "This is a completely new way to look at the stars
compared with what has been available for the past 50 years. It is very
exciting."
Professor Michel has found that the star pulsations are close to what was predicted for stars of this kind.
But there is

interest in crop circle research from his website. On the site he
states that their interest was aroused because crop circles appeared on
their land.
Colin's book
'Circular Evidence' was on the Queen's Summer Reading list in 1989 and
HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh subscribed to his Circles
Phenomenon Research Newsletter. The Duke also asked Colin to keep him
up-to-date with his research.
Colin
states that the British public has been continually lied to in regard
to the Royal Family's interest in UFOs. He thinks it is about time the
public is told the truth about this matter.
Nick Pope who was formerly head of the Ministry of Defence's UFO department replies that:
"Some
of the issues Colin highlights have arisen because the line between
official and private interest - even within government, the military
and the intelligence agencies - can be blurred. There are particular
sensitivities and political difficulties when members of the Royal
Family are involved.
"I
agree that the MoD has downplayed its interest and involvement in the
crop circle issue, as it has with the UFO phenomenon. This has been the
policy for many years and it's no secret that I had to play my part in
this when I worked for the government."
The Royal family's interest in UFOs actually goes back to the 1950s.

highly-influential "Flying Saucer Review" magazine when it began
publication in 1955, and he received copies right up to the time of his

The
Duke of Edinburgh kept a map at Buckingham Palace showing the location
of UFO sightings on his wall and he asked the British Air Ministry to
send him a copy of every UFO report they received. He also allowed his

Solar X-ray activity has remained flat-line for about
a week -until now. Just before midnight GMT (UTC) last night, new solar
acitvity began to take place. At first this might not seemremarkable.
That is, until we examine all the data associated withthis activity.
The odds are astronomical (no pun intended) that a sudden
change ofinactivity would happen EXACTLY at midnight, after more than
a weekof no real X-Ray activity. It appears that someone or something
was making their capabilities known to alter the Sun's operation. Such
technology is more dangerous than the biggest collection of atomicweapons
any country could have. Tinkering with Solar activity canresult in unpredictable,
grave and irreversible damage to Earth.
Tick marks along the bottom axis of each chart represent
3 hourintervals on all charts.
Fig. 1 - X-Ray activity for 2 1/2 days.
Fig. 2 - What these same X-ray wavelengths looked
like when veryactive almost one year ago, as measured by the very same
detector.Note the jagged red line between the flares. This was the normal
baseline for 1.0 to 8.0A wavelengths (long X-Rays.)
NASA has claimed in the past they don't understand (?)
why the redline (GOES 10 in Fig. 1) has remained a flat line for more
over ayear now. Perhaps the real reason is because there is no longer
any real measureable energy at that wavelength. If so, this marks avery
important change in the way our Sun is functioning.
Shortly after high noon (UTC) on January 24, a tiny blip
appears in Fig. 1. Apparently the satellite was detecting something at
this wavelength. Yet while recent activity for the same satellite which
was measuring activity at shorter wavelengths of .5 to 4.0A, we still
see no activity on the red line. Is it possible there reason for a flat
red line is the result of a probl

Someone at NASA released a photo that they shouldn’t have, a picture
of a piece of timber the size of a railroad tie, a photo that could get
someone killed. There is no mistaking that the object in the print
below is a piece of wood. NASA claims that Mars is a desert planet with
no life at all. NASA lies, repeatedly.
Where would a piece of timber this size come from? There are vast
forests on Mars, ones that are kept from the public. This piece of wood
looks like it floated to its present location, being partially sunk in
the soil. The ground around it is very interesting. Notice the flat
rock formation of the soil and the crevices in between them. Does this
look familiar? It appears to be the bed of a dried up pond. There had
to be a significant amount of water in this area, water high enough to
lift that railroad tie sized piece of timber and float is perhaps
several miles. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter showed that vast regions
of the Red Planet have been altered by floods. This dried pond effect
should come as no surprise.
This flood had to have happened within the past thirty or forty
years because the wood is intact, though this is judging the rate of
decay by Earth standards. Some may say that Mars did have water on it
long ago and that it even had an atmosphere, which is true, but a piece
of timber isn’t going to survive for thousands of years.
Both of the Viking Orbiters filmed vast forests on Mars, though no
subsequent probe to the Red Planet has shot a single frame of film
showing a tree. This was by design. The Viking photographs show more
than just a few trees but rather thousands upon thousand of them. These
trees appear to be much larger than Earth trees, having a leaf and
branch system that is unique to Mars. The foliage spans much wider than
a similar plants on Earth do, rising to who knows what heights. The
spacing between them could be the result of the dying Martian
atmosphere. Dense forests more than likely fi

An international team of scientists who analyzed data from the Gamma
Ray Spectrometer onboard NASA's Mars Odyssey reports new evidence for
the controversial idea that oceans once covered about a third of
ancient Mars.
"We compared Gamma Ray Spectrometer data on potassium,
thorium and iron above and below a shoreline believed to mark an
ancient ocean that covered a third of Mars' surface, and an inner
shoreline believed to mark a younger, smaller ocean," said University
of Arizona planetary geologist James M. Dohm, who led the international
investigation.
"Our investigation posed the question, Might we see a
greater concentration of these elements within the ancient shorelines
because water and rock containing the elements moved from the highlands
to the lowlands, where they eventually ponded as large water bodies?"
Dohm said.
Mars Odyssey's GRS, or Gamma Ray Spectrometer, led by
William Boynton of UA's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, has the unique
ability to detect elements buried as much as 1/3 meter, or 13 inches,
below the surface by the gamma rays they emit. That capability led to
GRS' dramatic 2002 discovery of water-ice near the surface throughout
much of high-latitude Mars.
Results from Mars Odyssey and other spacecraft suggest
that past watery conditions likely leached, transported and
concentrated such elements as potassium, thorium and iron, Dohm said.
"The regions below and above the two shoreline boundaries are like
cookie cutouts that can be compared to the regions above the
boundaries, as well as the total region."
The younger, inner shoreline is evidence that an ocean
about 10 times the size of the Mediterranean Sea, or about the size of
North America, existed on the northern plains of Mars a few billion
years ago. The larger, more ancient shoreline that covered a third of
Mars held an ocean about 20 time

pictures of never-before-seen parts of Mercury taken by NASA's
Messenger spacecraft are revealing surprises about the solar system's
innermost planet.
Usually the deepest craters are the biggest, but on Mercury there
are two craters right next to each other that are about the same size
even though one is four times deeper than the other. What's going on?
The shallow crater basin, which is about the size of the greater
Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metropolitan area, has been filled in
with a massive amount of lava, according to Maria Zuber of MIT, one of
the leaders of the Messenger mission. The 3,600 cubic miles of lava
would be enough to cover the cities in a 1.5-miles thick layer.
The lava comes from volcanoes that were first discovered on Messenger's first flyby of the planet in January.
"The surprise is that it appears to be more volcanic than the moon,"
Zuber said at a press conference. "Very few people would have thought
that before the first Messenger flyby."
The latest images were taken during Messenger's second flyby of
Mercury on Oct. 6. Combining the images with Zuber's altimetry data
gave the features depth and yielded a wealth of new information about
the planet. The spacecraft will make one more flyby in the future and
eventually settle into orbit around the planet in 2011. But scientists
are already poring over the data they've collected.
"I am just absolutely thrilled with the result," Zuber told
Wired.com, "for somebody who does tectonic and volcanic modeling, I am
in my element."
Our first glimpses of Mercury came from three flybys by Mariner 10
in the 1970s that captured 45 percent of the surface of the planet.
Messenger's first flyby took the first-ever pictures of Mercury's
western hemisphere, adding an additional 21 percent to the viewed
surface. After the second flyby on Oct. 6, 90 percent of the planet has
been imaged at 1 km (3,280 feet) resolution. Once in o

Claire Bates Last updated at 4:25 PM on 25th October 2008 It was said that in space noone can hear you scream,
but scientists have managed to record and listen to the sound of three
stars similar to our Sun. Outerspace is not a
total vacuum but is extremely diffuse with only around one particle per
cubic centimetre. Noise can therefore travel from distant galaxies but
would be inaudible to our ears without extra help. A
team used light curves collected over 60 days from France's Corot space
telescope to pick up the celestial sound, which has given them vital
information about processes deep within the cosmic bodies.
An illustration of the Corot satellite in
space. A team found the sound from three nearby stars picked up by the
telescope had regular repeating patterns Writing
in the journal Science, they discovered each star's sound had a regular
repeating pattern, which indicated the entire entity is pulsating. The
technique, called 'stellar seismology', helps to build an audio
'picture' of their surface texture and vibrations. The noise of each
stellar body depends on their age, size and chemical composition. Scientists
chose to listen to three nearby stars, all significantly hotter than
our Sun. They found they vibrated around 1.5 times as vigorously and
had a surface texture three times finer than our star.
Scientists hope using 'stellar seismology' will help them to better understand the inner workings of our Sun The
star pulsations were about 25 per cent weaker than predicted,
suggesting scientists may need to refine their theories of stellar
evolution. Professor Eric Michel, of the Paris Observatory
said: 'This is a completely new way to look at the stars compared with
what has been available for the past 50 years. It is very exciting.' A number of scientists are working out what the sounds from stars tell us about processes occurring inside stars. 'It's not easy,' Professor Ian Roxburgh of Queen Mary College, said. 'It's like liste

Horoscope enthusiasts will be happy to hear that a grand cosmic force
does indeed seem to be responsible for controlling the direction of all
life on Earth. However, this grand cosmic cycle has more to do with
extinction than finding a tall, handsome stranger.
Earlier this year, research revealed that the rise and fall of
species on Earth seems to be driven by the undulating motions of our
solar system as it travels through the Milky Way. Some scientists
believe that this cosmic force may offer the answer to some of the
biggest questions in our Earth’s biological history—especially where
evolution has fallen short.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found that marine
fossil records show that biodiversity increases and decreases based on
a 62-million-year cycle. At least two of the Earth's great mass
extinctions-the Permian extinction 250 million years ago and the
Ordovician extinction about 450 million years ago-correspond with peaks
of this cycle, which can't be explained by evolutionary theory.
Earlier this year, a team of researchers at the University of Kansas
came up with an out-of-this-world explanation for the phenomenon. Their
idea hinges upon the fact that stars move through space and sometimes
rush headlong through galaxies, or approach closely enough to cause a
brief cosmic tryst.
Our own star moves toward and away from the Milky Way's center, and
also up and down through the galactic plane. One complete up-and-down
cycle takes 64 million years- suspiciously close to the Earth's
biodiversity cycle.
Once the researchers independently confirmed the biodiversity cycle,
they then proposed a novel mechanism whereby which the Sun's galactic
travels is causing it.
It’s no secret that the Milky Way is being gravitationally pulled
toward a massive cluster of galaxies, called the Virgo Cluster, which
is located about 50 million light years away. Ad

Your mother always told you not to stare at the sun. But scientists
know better than to listen to "other people" when there's an
interesting question to be asked, and in astrophysics the biggest
question of all is "Where is everything?" Cosmological calculations
indicate that the vast array of objects we can detect are just foam on
top of a vast invisible sea of matter we can't detect, and two teams
think the key to the undetectable lies in our very own star.
This mysterious material is called "dark matter", on the highly
scientific grounds that we can only see things which are bright. There
are various candidates for this ghostly galactic gruel, any number of
which could be correct. They all share the quality of only barely
interacting with ordinary matter - so how stuff which, by definition,
barely affects the visible universe is meant to make up so much of it
is question for your philosophers. The scientists just want to see it.
One of the underdog expressions of the invisible stuff is the
axion. Less a new particle, more a new form of something we've already
seen, the axion is thought to be a new state which photons (light
particles) can be driven into (or pulled from) by intense magnetic
fields. While photons are massless, people capable of math which would
cause our brains to leak out or ears have shown that the axion could
have the required properties. All we have to do now is catch one.
The CERN Solar Telescope project in Geneva has built a
superconducting magnet, which they hope will convert the ethereal solar
axions back into detectable flashes of X-Rays. A Berkeley team is
instead counting on the coronal magnetic field of the sun itself, using
satellite imaging to map the photons from this intense field. This
might allow them to find the signature variations of axion-photon
conversion, though considering the sun is a vast fusion reactor for
producing light, it'll

Dark
spots, some as large as 50,000 miles in diameter, typically move across
the surface of the sun, contracting and expanding as they go. These
strange and powerful phenomena are known as sunspots, but now they are
all gone. Not even solar physicists know why it’s happening and what
this odd solar silence might be indicating for our future.
Although periods of inactivity are normal for the sun, this current
period has gone on much longer than usual and scientists are starting
to worry—at least a little bit. Recently 100 scientists from Europe,
Asia, Latin America, Africa and North America gathered to discuss the
issue at an international solar conference at Montana State University.
Today's sun is as inactive as it was two years ago, and solar
physicists don’t have a clue as to why.
"It continues to be dead," said Saku Tsuneta with the National
Astronomical Observatory of Japan, program manager for the Hinode solar
mission, noting that it is at least a little bit worrisome for
scientists.
Dana Longcope, a solar physicist at MSU, said the sun usually operates
on an 11-year cycle with maximum activity occurring in the middle of
the cycle. The last cycle reached its peak in 2001 and is believed to
be just ending now, Longcope said. The next cycle is just beginning and
is expected to reach its peak sometime around 2012. But so far nothing
is happening.
"It's a dead face," Tsuneta said of the sun's appearance.
Tsuneta said solar physicists aren't weather forecasters and they can't
predict the future. They do have the ability to observe, however, and
they have observed a longer-than-normal period of solar inactivity. In
the past, they observed that the sun once went 50 years without
producing sunspots. That period coincided with a little ice age on
Earth that lasted from 1650 to 1700. Coincidence? Some scientists say
it was, but many worry that it wasn’t.
