several years that after a person ingests a drug, their body may excrete

internal drug use, combined with improper disposal of unused drug
stores, has been blamed for residues of everything from antibiotics to
painkillers to hormones found in municipal and natural water supplies across the country. Because drugs are specifically designed to produce biological effects at very low concentrations, this pollution is considered a major threat to human and environmental health. Now a study conducted by researchers from the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA )
and Touro University in Henderson, Nev., and presented at the American
Chemical Society annual meeting in San Francisco has shown that the
shower and washing machine may be even more potent sources of
pharmaceutical pollution than the toilet. "We've long assumed that the active ingredients from medications enter the environment
as a result of their excretion via urine and feces," study co-author
Ilene Ruhoy said. "However, for the first time, we have identified

the SEC is busy investigating Goldman Sachs, it might want to look into
another Goldman-dominated fraud: computerized front running using
high-frequency trading programs.
Market
commentators are fond of talking about “free market capitalism,” but
according to Wall Street commentator Max Keiser, it is no more. It has
morphed into what his TV co-host Stacy Herbert calls “rigged market
capitalism”: all markets today are subject to manipulation for private
gain.
Keiser
isn’t just speculating about this. He claims to have invented one of
the most widely used programs for doing the rigging. Not that that’s
what he meant to invent. His patented program was designed to take the
manipulation out of markets. It would do this by matching buyers with
sellers automatically, eliminating “front running” – brokers buying or
selling ahead of large orders coming in from their clients. The
computer program was intended to remove the conflict of interest that
exists when brokers who match buyers with sellers are also selling from
their own accounts. But the program fell into the wrong hands and
became the prototype for automated trading programs that actually
facilitate front running.
Also
called High Frequency Trading (HFT) or “black box trading,” automated
program trading uses high-speed computers governed by complex
algorithms (instructions to the computer) to analyze data and transact
orders in massive quantities at very high speeds. Like the poker
player peeking in a mirror to see his opponent’s cards, HFT allows the
program trader to peek at major incoming orders and jump in front of
them to skim profits off the top. Note that these large institutional
orders are our money -- our pension funds, mutual funds, and 401Ks.

Department of Justice lawyers over the company’s business practices,
but some of their most-cherished PR talking points are being
obliterated by researchers.
In the past few months, we’ve learned that its much-vaunted technologies don’t really increase yields after al l; and aren’t really all that promising for adapting to climate change.
We’re also getting a trickle of information that calls into serious
question the PR talking point on which the entire GMO seed industry
hangs: that GMO products are safe to eat. This is a widely held
assumption; but as Don Lotter showed in a recent paper in the International Journal of the Sociology of Food and Agriculture, there
has actually been shockingly little research done on the long-term
effects of eating GMO foods—and most of what has been was conducted by
the industry itself.
The problem is that government funding for independent research on
GMOs is scant—and industry funding is non-existent. And it’s extremely
difficult for independent researchers to get their hands on GMO seeds
without signing restrictive contracts with their patent holders, as the
New York Times reported earlier this year.
The independent research that has been done on the health effects of GMOs paints an alarming picture. Here’s my
discussion of the results of a multigenerational study, funded by the
Austrian government, that came out last year on the effects of GMO corn
on mice. Short story: in the third and fourth generations, mice fed

Using implants, they worked out how to
control a beetle's take-off, flight and landing by stimulating the
brain to work the wings. They controlled
turns through stimulating the basilar muscles on one side or the other
to make the wings on that side flap harder. The embedded system uses nerve and muscle stimulators, a microbattery and a microcontroller with transceiver. They were implanted in the beetles when they were at the pupal stage. Three types of large beetles from Cameroon were used in the
experiments at the University of California in
Berkeley. The smallest was 2cm long, while the largest

A new study by University of Edinburgh scientists has raised concerns about the growing market for magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ) brain screening tests, which people can pay for out-of-pocket as part of ageneral health
screening. So why would anyone who has no symptoms or valid reason to
suspect a brain malady want one of these high price scans? The Scottish
researchers noted the tests are increasingly popular with the so-called
"worried well" who simply want to get rid of any fears they harbor
about having an undiagnosed brain tumor, stroke or other condition. The
trouble is, these MRIs for the healthy are far more likely to do more
harm than good. The research team reached their conclusion after
analyzing the results of almost 20,000 brain scans from people who
underwent the tests. These research subjects had no symptoms suggesting
that they were suffering from an undiagnosed brain condition. Instead,
they had the brain scans as part of general health screenings or they were volunteers for medical research. The
University of Edinburgh scientists found that less than three per cent
of these healthy people had an abnormality on a brain MRI scan. But
that didn't mean they had some awful problem that needed medical care.

After complaints about American dominance of the internet
and growing disquiet in some parts of the world, Washington has said it
will relinquish some control over the way the network is run and allow
foreign governments more of a say in the future of the system. Icann
– the official body that ultimately controls the development of the
internet thanks to its oversight of web addresses such as .com, .net
and .org – said today that it was ending its agreement with the US
government. The deal, part of a contract negotiated with the US
department of commerce, effectively pushes California-based Icann
towards a new status as an international body with greater
representation from companies and governments around the globe. Icann
had previously been operating under the auspices of the American
government, which had control of the net thanks to its initial role in
developing the underlying technologies used for connecting computers
together. But the fresh focus will give other countries a more
prominent role in determining what takes place online, and even the way
in which it happens – opening the door for a virtual United Nations,
where many officials gather to discuss potential changes to the

have brought untold horrors upon Europe over the centuries, especially
the two world wars of the last one. Until now, though, the continent
has been spared the ultimate cataclysm of a missile war. Though
twenty years after the end of the Cold War recent news articles contain
reports that would have been shocking even during the depths of the
East-West conflict in Europe that followed World War II. A
dispatch quoting a Finnish defense official two days ago bore the title
"US could launch missiles from the Baltic Sea" and a U.S. armed forces
website yesterday spoke in reference to proposed missile shield plans
of "a big, complex, dangerous battle in the space over Europe." On
September 28 a feature called "BMD fleet plans Europe defense mission"
appeared in the Navy Times which reported that "Ballistic-missile
defense warships have become the keystone in a new national
strategy....Rather than field sensors and missiles on the ground in
Poland and the Czech Republic, the U.S. will first maintain a presence
of at least two or three Aegis BMD ships in the waters around Europe,
starting in 2011." [1] This development is in keeping with U.S
Pentagon chief Robert Gates' presentation of September 17 in which,
confirming President Obama's announcement to replace and supplement his
predecessor's project of placing ten ground-based interceptor missiles
in Poland and a complementary radar installation in the Czech Republic,
he laid out a three-step strategy to enhance (his word) U.S. missile
shield plans in Europe. In a Defense Department briefing with
Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General James Cartwright,
Gates explained the logic behind the shift."Over the last few
